i live in chicago and the weather is very unusual read details?
today the temperature in chicago was in the 60s which was very unusual but what also was very weird was the fact that we had a tornado watch today (January!!!) south of us there were tuns of tornado warnings. I would be suprised just for the fact that it would rain in january, or even more supprised to hear a crackle of thunder, but a tornado in January!!! What is causing this extremely unusual weather not just in Chicago but also in the rest of the country. Many states broke records of heat since the end of the 1800s in January and Illinois broke its record for having an actual tornado in this month since 1860s. This just dosent make since what is causing this very ironic, intense weather, and temperatures
Yes I totally agree with you Sam, this weather we are having is highly unusual. I believe that the main culprit for today's severe weather and high temperatures in the central and eastern U.S. is the movement northward of the jet-stream.
The jet-stream is a river of air that moves as fast as 250 mph high in the atmosphere. It blows from west to east and is responsible for guiding most weather systems in the continental U.S.
When it shifts northward as it did today, warmer temperatures move into the region. Warm-moist air from the Gulf of Mexico rushed northward right over Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, etc... laying the foundation for the potential of an outbreak of severe weather.
Dr. Greg Forbes (a severe weather expert on the Weather Channel) says that it is very rare to find such storms so far north in January. Tornadoes are not uncommon in January, but the case here is that they are so far north (into Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin). This is not supposed to happen so early in the year. It concerns me and I'm sure that most other meteorologists are concerned by this as well. Perhaps this is a result of global warming, but there is no conclusive evidence to support this.
