How do pilots know how high the wheels are during landing?

I think this would be important to know in order to achieve a smooth landing. In my flight sim games, some planes have a radar altimeter, but I can't imagine that pilots watch that on the way down. So what's the secret to flaring at just the right height, etc.?

John's right on the money. Practice.
There are several different methods like focusing on the opposite end of the runway, holding landing attitude and reducing power, but nothing can replace practice.
You develop a sight picture of the runway environment, almost subconsciously.
Larger aircraft have radar altimeters that call out altitudes during descent. They don't need to look at it. These are helpful, but they can not replace the repeated experience of seeing outside visual cues during landing.
